Mobile VoIP Overview

Mobile VoIP, also known as mVoIP, is simply another way to utilize voice over ip technology on a computer network. Two types of technology are mainly used – cordless and 3/4g.  The cordless protocols are mainly used for short range solutions, or where all phones are connected over the same local area network (LAN).  3/4g is used for longer ranged distances.

There are a few different ways mobile phones can be used with VoIP technology.  The most common way is turning the handset into a normal SIP client.  This uses a chosen data network to send & receive SIP messaging and RTP for the voice. To do this the handset must have high-speed data transfer.  This method uses standard VoIP protocols over broadband capable wireless network connections, such HDSPA, WiFi or WiMAX.

Mobile VoIP requires a compromise between portability and cost. Eg. Voice over Wi-Fi is mostly a free service but is only available within the range of the access point you are connected to. Cordless protocols offer very good voice support but it requires all base stations to communicate through one LAN as the hand-off protocol is not usually offered by carriers or most handsets.

Some good examples of Mobile VoIP companies are:
