Internet Phones come in numerous forms such as standalone software that’s utilized by a pc/msac or purposly constructed devices that behave much the same as normal phones. There is an ever increasing number of internet phones such as Wi-Fi enabled smart phones and PDAs that are pre-loaded with SIP clients and are more than capable of running over an Internet Protocol service.

Internet Phones utilise voice over IP (VoIP) techn, enabling telephone calls to be made over an IP network, usually the internet, instead of the normal public telephone switch network systems. Phone calls can be configured up to use the net or a private Internet Protocol networks – for example an internal IP net owned by a company or office. This kind of internet phone uses numerous control protocols such as Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), or one of a number of proprietary protocols that a commonly used by Skype.
